Canadian comedian Rick Mercer is in Hamilton again tonight performing a benefit show for the The John Howard Society of Hamilton and Burlington at Hamilton's Theatre Aquarius. If you have the chance, go see the show tonight. There are still some seats available and it's for a great cause.
He opened up the two-night run last night and I was able to meet up with him backstage after his tech rehearsal yesterday evening. Since I knew I only had 10-15 minutes with him, I asked my friend and colleague Marek Michalek to assist.
Earlier in the afternoon, around noon, I drove to the theatre to scout locations so I could get three unique setups. Props to tech director Greg Dougherty for showing me around. I found my three spots: on a crate in front of the ropes backstage, the massive canvas backdrop to use as a white backdrop to fall-off grey, and a very cool, large industrial door.
We arrived at Aquarius at 6pm, setup the three locations, and we ready to shoot by 7pm sharp. Since I only have four lights, and only brought three light stands, I lit the setups for single-light portraits. This isn't a problem as a lot of my portraits are shot with a single source, anyway. I love the drama of deep shadows and shots with a cinematic look.
This is what I captured last night.
